According to popular opinion, I am a racist for the following reasons:
1. I am white
2. I live in the South
3. I don't listen to Hip Hop or Rap music
4. I don't agree with much of what the President is doing
Let me address each one of these points individually.
Point 1. Yes, I am white. I'm actually very white. I don't have even a hint of a tan, just kinda a fish belly color. But you see, my parents were white too, so you can't really hold this one against me.
Point 2. I was born and raised in the south. Again, this one is on my parents. Oh, I guess I could have moved away when I grew up, but hey, it's not a bad place to live. Especially when your whole family and most all of your friends live there too. Besides, I'm not much of a mover anyway. I've only lived in three different places my whole life, and all of those were within a few miles of each other. I have been living where I am now for over 30 years and we are working on the 3rd generation coming up on this place.
Point 3. I guess I should have said I don't listen to Hip Hop or Rap music now. I had to listen to it at some point to know that I don't care much for it. I also don't care much for Opera, Techno or Metal (you know, the kind that sing about the devil?) I do like most other kinds of music including Motown.
Point 4. Now for the big one. The one that has everyone's dander up. I happen to disagree with the President on several issues. It has nothing to do with the color of his skin. I didn't agree with everything Mr. Bush did either. Is it possible to be prejudiced against Texans? I kinda liked Mr. Clinton, until the Monica thing. At least he answered my e-mail. Mr. Bush didn't. Then there is Mr. Carter. Need I say more? Let's don't forget the first Mr. Bush, Mr. Read My Lips.
This is what it boils down to dear readers. I don't care what color is in the Oval office. I care what policies and agendas are there. I care what the President thinks is good for this country, not what he looks like. I think it is perfectly OK to disagree with those in office. We need to pay attention! Speak out if something isn't right.
I'm really tired of hearing that every opinion contrary to Mr. Obama's stems from racism. I just don't believe that that is true. Don't think I have my head in the sand. I know that there is still plenty of racism to go around, but everything really isn't about race, unless it's made to seem that way. Stick to the issues and don't be intimidated when someone calls you a racist just because you don't agree with them. That is just a distraction, a way of shutting you up. Remember racism can go both ways.

Very well said!
ReplyDeleteGreat post! Yes, I thought we had moved further away from racism in this country until Obama started his campaign for President. Since then, if you disagree with someone about politics, they play that dirty race card. A lot of people don't seem too informed on major issues we are facing and they use racism to discredit you. What they don't get is, it only makes them look bad. I'm so sick of the race card.
